The difference: BaaS vs DRaaS

The difference between BaaS and DRaaS can be illustrated with a simple analogy.
Imagine your bicycle is wrecked.

IP ServerOne BaaS vs DRaaS

With recovery from BaaS, you would get your bicycle back, but it would be in pieces that you would need to reassemble.

IP ServerOne BaaS vs DRaaS

With recovery from DRaaS, the bicycle will reappear or reassemble completely and is ready to cycle away.

Backup as a Service (BaaS) only stores and secures data files, whereas Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) stores and secures the entire server, including the operating system, applications, configuration, and data.

Here’s the breakdown of the differences:

Type of Recovery Backup & Standard Recovery Disaster Recovery
Key Function Protects against data loss
  • High Availability for mission-critical applications
  • Instant recovery after a disaster
Target Device
  • Servers, workstations, mobile devices
  • Cloud-based Apps (e.g Microsoft 365, Google, Salesforce etc.)
Critical servers and virtual machines
Recovery Requirements
  • Data loss avoidance
  • Longer-term retention of past data
  • Ability to restore/ access single files or emails – quickly
  • Quickly failover critical workloads to an offsite environment
  • Fail-back to the primary site
Required Infrastructure  Secure local and off-site storage
  • High-performance off-site storage
  • Compute and network resources
  • DR orchestration software
Storage Type Local and/or off-site cold storage Offsite hot storage
Recovery Time Objective (RTO)  Slow (days/weeks) Fast (minutes)
Usage Frequency Often Rarely
Ease of DR Testing Complex Easy

“Consider what you want to protect yourself against when choosing between BaaS or DRaaS.”

In short, backup as a service is suitable for long-term growing data storage in the cloud, while disaster recovery as a service is suitable for instant recovery of the entire VM with a smaller scale of data, in the event of disaster strikes.

Since BaaS solely protects and recovers the data and not the infrastructure, the price point is relatively cheaper compared to DRaaS, which protects and recovers the entire data and infrastructure. However, in BaaS, you will be responsible for acquiring and configuring a new server before the service can be up and running, while with DRaaS, your entire service/VM will be restored within the RTO with the help of our 24×7 in-house expertise.

Let us help to design and implement a backup and disaster recovery strategy that just works-and we can even off-load your IT manpower and manage it for you with our Managed Backup & DR services.

IP ServerOne Backup and Disaster Recovery as a Service

What is Backup & Disaster Recovery as a Service?

Backup & Disaster Recovery as a Service, as stated in its name, consists of 2 components: Backup as a Service (Baas) and Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS).

IP ServerOne BaaS

What is BaaS?

Back up as a Service (BaaS) also known as cloud backup, is an off-site data storage for files, folders, or the entire contents of the hard drive which is regularly backed up to a remote and secure cloud-based data repository over a network connection.

With BaaS, you can retrieve all the backed-up data. However, the business can be restored only after a new server is purchased and configured with the associated OS and networks, which may take a few days or weeks.

IP ServerOne DRaaS

What is DRaaS?

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) enables the organization to back up data and the entire IT infrastructure to a secure remote cloud environment. After a disaster strikes, the organization will be able to recover and regain access to mission-critical data and infrastructure within hours or minutes.

With DRaaS, even if the physical server is destroyed, the server image can be restored to a different virtual machine (VM) so that your business can be up and running again in a short time frame.
